CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Despite his exhaustion, it was after daybreak when Lowen finally fell asleep. Even then he only managed a few hours before he woke feeling like a zombie. He probably looked like one too, he thought, as he followed the smell of bacon downstairs.

“Perfect timing,” Beth said, turning from the stove while Ellie ran over to him.

“Good morning!” she said, taking his hand. “We’re having eggs for breakfast.”

“And bacon,” Beth told him.

“Not me. I don’t like bacon.” Ellie pulled him to the table where Trystan greeted him through a yawn.

“You look as though you slept about as well as I did,” Lowen said, sitting.

“My brain wouldn’t switch off.”

Ellie climbed onto the chair beside Trystan. “Mummy said you saved Mia, like superheroes.”

“Trystan did seem a little bit like Spiderman at one point,” Lowen said idly.

Beth brought a plate of bacon to the table. “In what way?”

“He’s joking,” Trystan said tightly while Lowen grimaced and quickly set about loading his plate with bacon and eggs.

“Is there something you’re not telling me?” Beth said as she took a seat at the table.

Trystan grinned at her. “Nope.”

“I can tell when you’re lying.”

“Fine.” He rolled his eyes. “I’ll fill you in later.”

“Can someone cut the top off my egg?” Ellie asked, then pushed it in Trystan’s direction. The egg cup caught on the table and Ellie growled when the egg toppled out. “This egg cup doesn’t work!”

“You’re blaming the egg cup?” Trystan asked, scooping the egg up again and taking a knife to the side of it.

“The egg doesn’t fit properly,” she complained. “It always wobbles.”

Trystan leaned close and whispered something in her ear. Her eyes lit up as she turned to Lowen.

“Can you make egg cups?”

He managed a smile. “I’ve never tried.”

“Oh.” She stuck her bottom lip out.

“I could give it a go,” he told her.

“Do you think you can make one the right size so the egg doesn’t wobble?”

“I think I probably can.”

She beamed. “Will you make one today?”

“Maybe not today, but soon.”

Ellie continued to chatter away as they ate. Once Lowen had devoured far too much bacon and eggs he felt suddenly exhausted.

“I’m going to head home,” he said, after helping to clear the table. “Thanks for breakfast and everything.”

“Can’t you stay and draw with me?” Ellie asked, taking his hand and snuggling her cheek against it.

Beth ran a hand over Ellie’s hair. “Lowen probably needs to go home and sleep. He had a busy night last night, remember?”

“Will you come another day?” Ellie asked, remaining attached to him as he moved towards the door.

“Maybe. Or you could visit me.”

She smiled up at him, then skipped away when Beth told her to go and wash the remnants of breakfast from her face.

“I can give you a lift down to the harbour,” Trystan said. “I’ve still got Mum’s car keys.”

“How did Mum get home?” Lowen asked.

“One of the paramedics drove her,” Beth told him, then kissed his cheek at the door.

“Good.” He yawned and took Trystan up on his offer.

They made the short drive in silence.
